For the most part one could assume that an idle tool with product had already done its processing - but not always. And it was the not always part which scrapped lots. Until the lid was opened after processing - the interfacing software explicitly stated whether that lot had been processed (or not).

As an aside to the project, we converted the recipes from binary to ascii formatting, for easier inspection by quality and engineering.
The FSI Mercury Spray batch spray system was a fine tool, with just one operator interfacing problem. The tool operated like a washing machine and when an operator walked up to an idle tool with product loaded, the basic question of was this product processed? remained unanswered.
